Our History

Since the punk-rock 70’s when Urbanspace founded Camden Lock Market to 570 Lexington Avenue, thousands of creative chefs and designers on both sides of the Atlantic have gotten their start at Urbanspace projects. Urbanspace has learned through experience how to build a scalable business that brings the creative expression of individual entrepreneurs directly to consumers and distills a replicable process designed to capture authenticity.

Urbanspace was founded in 1972 as Urban Space Management, the brainchild of Eric Reynolds. The company has developed 50+ projects, revamped derelict city spaces, conserved heritage buildings, and created vibrant new places for community and commercial gathering. Urbanspace conceived markets at Camden Lock and Spitalfields draw millions of visitors per year and have driven significant real estate value: Camden Lock was sold to Sagi and Spitafields to Ashkenazy at nine-figure price tags.

In 1993, Eldon Scott decamped from the London team and arrived in New York, establishing our US operations with the founding of then novel outdoor markets at Union Square, Central Park and Bryant Park, amongst others. These markets quickly built brand and traffic. Bryant Park Holiday Market is the largest event in North America with over 4MM visitors in just over two months.

As elevated street food and food trucks gained cult status, Scott moved to indoor markets and food halls based on Camden and Spitalfields. Today, Urbanspace continues to connect creative entrepreneurs and chefs with curious, creativity-seeking customers by reaching out to them in new communities across the country.

Urbanspace curates immersive public markets where creativity, entrepreneurship and community flourish.

We imagine a network of marketplaces where communities can gather and share in local culture and cuisine; a platform for entrepreneurial growth; a place where adventurous consumers can play an active role in creating their local retail landscape.

Our Values

Make Connections: We build community by connecting creative minds and the curious in a single space. We celebrate collaboration rather than individual successes.

Foster Inclusivity: We strive to create equitable market access for our chefs and makers and celebrate diversity and inclusion across race, gender, age, religion, and identity in every aspect of our business.

Keep It Real: We operate on human-terms, building one-on-one relationships that live between corporate reliability and creative chaos.

Take a Risk: We’re entrepreneurial by nature – experimental and nimble. There’s more than one way to skin a cat – so create something extraordinary. And never stop improving.

Host A Great Party: We thrive on interesting, thought-provoking conversation. Our environments enable entrepreneurs to thrive and provide every visitor, old and new, with a platform for self-expression.
